Beekeeping in Jacksonville, Florida (Hardiness Zone 9b) means our season starts earlier than most. While much of the country is still buried in snow, our bees are already sensing the coming spring and the early hints of the maple bloom.

In my first video of 2026, I walk through the essential January chores that set the foundation for a successful year.

Getting Ahead of the Curve

January is all about readiness. In this update, I cover:

  • Hive Assessments: Checking food stores to ensure colonies didn’t burn through their winter reserves during late-season warm spells.
  • Equipment Preparation: Getting the gear ready for the spring buildup and the upcoming swarm season.
  • Early Signs of Buildup: Observing the first signs of pollen collection as the bees prepare for the spring flow.

Looking Ahead

With the January chores handled, our focus shifts to February. This is when the real work begins with queen grafting starting mid-month and Nuc availability following shortly after in March.
